What is the importance of protein?

The word protein comes from the Greek word “proteos” which means “First place” or “Primary”. Just like its meaning importance of protein is that it is a macronutrient that is required by the body to carry out important bodily functions.

The importance of protein is vast. Protein plays an integral part in the growth and maintenance of tissues. The body’s protein requirement depends on the individual’s health and activity level, For example, a person who regularly weight trains requires a lot more protein than other individuals.

There are enzymes in our body that are proteins and they aid in various biochemical reactions outside the cells. Enzymes may also function outside the cell, such as digestive enzymes like lactase and sucrase, which help digest sugar. Some enzymes require other molecules, such as vitamins or minerals, for a reaction to take place.

Functions of protein  in the body

There is a class of protein that is fibrous and provides rigidity and stiffness to tissues. Namely, these proteins are elastin, collagen, and keratin. These proteins help various parts of the body with elasticity, structure, and strength.

The protein present in blood maintains the proper fluid balance between blood and the surrounding tissues.

Protein helps in making antibodies in the body which helps in fighting bacteria and viruses.

Protein has many roles in your body. It helps repair and build your body’s tissues, allows metabolic reactions to take place, and coordinates bodily functions.In addition to providing your body with a structural framework, proteins also maintain proper pH and fluid balance.

Finally, they keep your immune system strong, transport and store nutrients, and can act as an energy source, if needed. Collectively, these functions make protein one of the most important nutrients for your health.
